Why do i hear a burst of air when putting on brakes?

Brakes went out today. Checked the fluid, it did need some. But now when putting on brakes i hear a burst of air, is this normal?

Could be a leak in the brake booster. Do you here it around the brake pedal? Does the engine run poorly when the brakes are held down?
