What does it do if you shift it manually? After it's warmed up (cooling fans have cycled at least once) check fluid level. Check fluid level with engine OFF on LEVEL ground.///////////////revised answer.....nothing to lose ....ALL to gain....Had an '89 (long time ago) same symptom- ended up a fluid change (not flush, just drain & fill) and took it out on empty open road shifted manually into low and floored it , let it red line then hit the next gear , and again red line then shifted manually to next , repeated twice and whatever crap was causing the valve body to hang-up , got dislodged and the owner drove the car trouble-free for 2 more years , until they sold it! IF engine can handle it , may be worth a shot , rather than being sold a re-build job --------just a thought...

An effective diagnosis will require Scan Tool Interface & analysis of sensor & actuator solenoid waveforms,
the vehicle needs this procedure for the most cost efficient repair.
