There is no top or bottom as far as cylinder count. It is front to back! Front of the motor is closest to the passenger side fender, number one is the closest cyl. to the front of motor, then the next one back is number two, then number three and finally number four which is closest to the drivers side fender.

passenger side to driver side when outside facing open bonnet. left to right (1 - 4) when hood up and you looking at motor from front of car,
