is this a u-joint/cv-joint that is going out? Did not see
this listed as a choice? How difficult/exspensive is this
to repair?

The only way to know is to have it checked out hands-on! Guessing is no help.

thanks, any shops in this area you would recommend?

Check for a shop in your zip at the top of this page. ( find a shop) In reality that is the only way to find this noise!!! Been doing this for 42 years so....! Save yourself some money, have it checked! I will add if doing this on dry pavement, it could be quite a few things! Puts a lot of strain on the 4x4 system!

That noise when you engage the front axle and make a turn is what you hear when a CVC joint is going bad.
