What material is used on the front disk brake pads

(2006 Subaru Forester)
I have been told the pads should be replaced. It seems there are three choices. What is installed at the factory?
What seems to make the problem better or worse? It does fine , no noise, car stops perfect. I just question the reason. I was told I needed everythingg
How long have you had this problem? It has not been a problem, the rotors are w/o any scoreing at all.
