What is the cause of coolant leaking?

(1990 Buick Century)
in Orlando, FL on February 12, 2012
The coolant leaks only when the engine is on. Looks like it is behind the water pump but hard to see exactly. Coolant smells a little like it's burned. Car running rough. Water pump or a gasket?

could be either. the water pump has a weep hole in it and can leak there, replace both at the same time. as far as running rough, how hot did you get it and how long did you drive it hot
