What is involved in a Compressor test to find Misfire?

(2007 Pontiac Torrent)
Earlier I mentioned that my engine light was blinking. A friend with an OBD II says the code was Multi Misfire P0300 and there was a strong smell in the cabin. A follow up with the auto shop on the status of his findings and the only thing they said today was that the vehicle runs rough when start. They will perform a Compressor Test to find out what is going on. What is a compressor test and would it tell me if my vehicle blown a head gasket, which come co-workers believe? Since the leak of my coolant, the radiator was replaced, hoses, and water pump and transmission oil coolant line. To me it seems as if the shop is performing an elimination process iwhich I am afraid I will be responsibility of a large bill.

It’s called a ‘compression’ test .. This test is performed to determine how much compression each cylinder has..

An engine must have sufficient COMPRESSION on each cylinder to perform as it should.

An engine must also have sufficient ignition spark and fuel delivery to each cylinder.

In reality the ONLY way to discover what has failed is indeed by the process of elimination - that’s how it done.

Good luck with the outcome!

It is indeed a rarity when even a well seasoned technician can simply walk up to a problematic vehicle and automatically determine what has failed.

( Of course I do that all the time! )

Systematic *hands-on* testing must be performed so the failure can be proven - instead of the ‘more expensive’ method of just putting parts on the vehicle until it is hopefully fixed..

Yes the compression test will help determine IF there is a head gasket problem - along with additional testing that will also likely take place.
