What does it mean if the key is not coming out of the ignition

(2006 Toyota Corolla)

The key intermitently comes out of the ignition, but sometimes it will not allow me to remove it.

you either have one of two problems:
(1) key is worn out (try another one)
(2) ignition tumbler is failing and one day may not start because the key won't turn.
