What could cause my car to make a clacking sound which stops after car warms up?

(1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK320)
Car was running great but suddenly started making a clacking sound similar to the sound of something stuck in the wheel (like a stick, etc.)This isn't a great comparison but the sound reminds me of the sound a kid's bike makes when he sticks cards, etc. in the spokes to purposely cause an 'engine like' clacking sound. Obviously the sound my car is making is stronger and louder than the sound of a kid's bike with cards stuck in the spokes. After the car warms up the clacking goes away. It has 106,000 miles. I purchased car a couple of months ago so not sure of its history.

Where is the sound coming from? Can you hear it in the engine compartment while the engine is idling? Check all your fluids before driving the car again. If you track the noise down get it in to a local shop. GL
