What causes the engine to shudder and stall after brake is applied and put in

(1990 Toyota 4Runner)
reverse? After doing this several times the car works normally.

You may have a dirty throttle body or clogged idle air control valve which is not allowing specified air-flow. Also, you could have a substantial vacuum leak. Either way, you will need to take this one in and have it professionally inspected and diagnosed. Sorry for your troubles and happy holidays!
