What causes the engine to die when it is shifted into reverse or or Drive?

Typically occurs when the engine is already warmed up, and has been driven around for a little bit. If I notice it starting to die, I can save it by giving it gas, but it shouldn't be happening. Recently passed Smog with flying colors, but I'm thinking it could be a loss of vacuum (haven't tested it yet), or the ignition module(?). It has a new (refurbished) transmission and torque converter installed last summer, as well as many other mechanical restorations/maintenance replacements (distributor, spark plugs, etc).

How's the transmission fluid look? Also check your intake boot for tears. When the engine shifts when put in gear unmetered air can cause the engine to stall.

Transmission fluid is pink. It recently got worked on, as the gears were slipping a little bit, but they got fixed
