Water Resevoir leaks

(1990 Volvo 240)
in Torrington, CT on June 17, 2018
I have a 1990 Volvo DL wagon. When I fill the water resevoir, all the water runs out on ground. I don't see any problems with hoses. I fill it, drive a short distance, and the temp gauge gets hot, no water in resev oir.
Someone said it's probably the water pump. But I can't afford a tow truck to get it to a garage ( told not to drive it like this). Besides, I'm not sure if it is the pump, or something else. Possibly something I can do to fix it to get it to garage? Love this car. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.
How long have you had this problem? About a month

Hello,
Check your oil for coolant. It may be a milky-creamy color combined with motor oil.

My concern is that you have a head gasket issue that is pushing the coolant from your reservoir.

Hi casey40510. for responding. The oil is fine. The water isn't exactly pushed out, but empties on the ground while car is standing still, motor off. I hope ($$) it's not the head gasket..

I hope it is not as well.

When there is excess pressure in the cooling system, it shoots out of the radiator cap, into the overflow bottle. Once the overflow bottle fills up, it overflows from the overflow tube.

It's kinda like the overflow tube is a straw and the low pressure outside the system is sucking the coolant out.

It could be from heat expanding the coolant or blockage in the system as well, but you'll have to diagnose it.

You could try to take some of the resistance out of the system by removing the thermostat, but without diagnosing the issue with a compression test for the engine's cylinders, and pressure testing the engine cooling system, you really have nowhere to start except replacing parts (not advised).
