Van is in park and shifts to reverse on it own

(2004 Dodge Sprinter 2500)
Driver parks van, engine running shifted into park, van starts reversing with nobody at the wheel. This has happened twice in the last 3 months.
What seems to make the problem better or worse? not driving the van, it is safer

That's not at all OK -- have this checked out as soon as possible to prevent injury or an accident. I would guess it has something to do with the sensor that communicates shift lever position, but I don't have a precedent to lean on for this. So a diagnostic test is in order.
