Some engines have plastic valve covers that may warp and distort over time or due to incorrect tightening of the hardware securing the valve cover. Stamped steel valve covers should never "crack". Perhaps an oil leak may occur from the PCV valve or cover gasket but would not crack under normal conditions.
If the rocker shaft broke or other component failure of the valve gear was experienced perhaps something has damaged the valve cover from the inside signifying internal damage. The cover would have to be taken of to access the damage.
