Question Asked: Transfer Control Unit Not working?
January 17, 2011, 05:14 AM
There is an ad for this car and the person says the TCU quit working so the car will only get up to 2nd gear. So, what is this, and how much would it cost to repair it? Is it safe to continue driving the car and will there be any further detriment to the engine if one drives it in this state, just in 2nd gear?
Question Asked: Fuel Leak
January 16, 2011, 11:22 AM
I have a serious leak with the fuel. It started after the snow began to melt, I believe some hardened slush dislodged a hose or something under the car or caused a puncture. I had started to smell a gas smell in my car that was faint. So I drove it home. That night I took it out again and drove it for awhile. When I was sitting in the drive-thru, I noticed the smell was incredibly strong. I took the car home and parked it for a couple days. My Uncle came over and said that it was probably just an exhaust leak and to drive with the windows down until payday so I could get it fixed. So, that night I put 1/3 tank of gas in the tank and drove around. The smell was there, but mostly at stop lights. Normally I can get about 17mpg, but after driving for maybe 20mi at the most in-town, I was at a stop light when the car ran out of gas. When I pushed the car to the side of the road, I noticed that there was a huge puddle of fuel directly beneath where the engine was. So, I do not think it is the tank itself leaking, but I am not sure what would cause the entire contents of my tank to end up on the ground. When I stuck my hand in it to smell it and make sure it was gas, I noticed that it was greasy and felt kind of like oil, but smelled like gas. I do know that the car needs a head gasket replacement as there is oil in the coolant reservoir and I can see the little air bubbles on the oil dipstick when I check the oil. No overheating, though. I don't think the two issues are related, but hopefully the info helps. What could be causing the issue and what would be the cost of the repair? Additionally, is this something that an engine overhaul might cure, and what would the cost of that be?
Question Asked: Digital Dash Doesn't Work
November 18, 2009, 11:49 AM
My digital dash doesn't work so I don't know how fast the car is going, how much gas I have, how many miles are on it etc. The only things on the dash that work are the blinker lights, the check engine light (which is always on and I just got my oil and everything else changed) and the cruise control light. At night, when the headlights are on, the left blinker indicator light in the dash stays lit constantly, but the right one only turns on when the right blinker is on. None of the gauge buttons work and I think there's 10 of them without going outside to look, but they beep when I push them. The dash also gets very hot if I am going on road trips and the lights are on for a long time, so I don't know if the dash lights might've melted anything or burned anything. I don't know what's wrong with it and I can't find anything even close to it in the list of repairs. I also replaced every fuse in my fuse box with new fuses and it didn't solve the issue. I just want to know what's going on and what it'll cost before I take it anywhere. Thanks!

A door window may move slowly or stop in mid travel due to a failing power window motor. The affected window may start working again after the motor cools off. Replacing the faulty window motor will commonly correct this concern.

Car Review: 1991 Oldsmobile 98
November 18, 2009, 11:55 AM
I have no clue how many miles the car has because the entire digital dash quit working. The air-conditioning doesn't work either and a ton of other things. Now, I've been told the head gasket is starting to go which will cost more to fix than the car is worth! On the up side it is a comfy car with lots of leg room and head room. It drives smooth and it's a pretty quiet car. When it shifts it doesn't jerk around which is nice and mine still has the original sound system which sounds pretty good. It steers like a dream and I could probably drive it with one finger (except that's not too safe ^_^).
