Truck rpms jump from 1800 to 3000 rpms when driving

(2006 Dodge Ram 2500)
while driving 55-60 mph rpms jump from 1800 to 3000 rpms then back to normal. doesn't feel like it is down shifting feels like slipping into neural. doesn't do it consistently
What seems to make the problem better or worse? does not do it consitently
How long have you had this problem? couple weeks

This has to be transmission related - hands-on inspection and testing by qualified personnel will be required... Not likely going to be a quick//easy repair or anything the average DIYer can do to fix.
