Transmission Can just the third gear be fixed ?

(1996 Ford Explorer)
Think of buying one with less than 50,000 on a rebuilt engine. But they say transmission needs third gear replaced.
Is it possible to fix only third gear and then transmission is fine?

Is this an automatic transmission? If so, diagnostic testing will be required to figure out what has happened to the transmission. "Fixing third gear" or "replacing third gear" is not something that happens by swapping out a part.

If this is a manual transmission, then essentially a rebuild of gears as needed and synchronizers as well as bearings should be performed, with special attention paid to the case and input and output shafts. A transmission specialist is required.
