MY 1998 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE HAS NO PROBLEM IN REVERSE BUT SLOW TAKING OFF IN DRIVE AND RPM RUN HI OVER 40MPH

I think you have a transmission problem and it's running in 2nd as a default 'limp-in' mode to get you home or to a transmission shop to check it out.
