Tranny troubles

(1993 Oldsmobile Achieva)
in Oroville, CA on August 17, 2010
My car was sitting for about 5 years with little driving in between to keep the engine and everything running good. Anyways, now my transmission is slow to downshift to 1st and sometimes slips out of gear going around corners. I've called many transmission places and all of them ofcourse want me to bring it down. I explain the problem perfectly yet none are willing to give me a clue on what it could be. A simple adjustment? New transmission? Any ideas would be super helpful as I want my car running as best as possible.

no one can diag over the phone no matter how perfect you describe the issue. you need to take it to someone for a diag.

Most likely your shift valves are varnished from sitting. I would get an Automatic Transmission treatment at a good parts store to free up the shift valves. I used to rebuild Transmissions at Dealerships and I even used Auto Transmission treatments there, believe it or not.
After the shift valves are working properly, service the Trans and use another bottle of the Treatment to keep the valves from re-varnishing.

I appreciate your help dandd. My transmission works 95% better now. The slipping isn't completely gone but it barely shows up now. Also I can drive in quiting time traffic now since I dont have to worry about my car stalling while it down shifts to first. Thanks again
