Q: Torque converter failed, should I also replace the transmission? on 2005 Volkswagen Passat TDI

The car sat for 12 days in mild winter weather from 12/14 - 12/26. Initial engine start was really rough but after a few minutes it seemed fine. A few days later the MIL came on. Took to VW dealer and diagnostic code revealed TC failure.

Ask there opinion, Honda's that give transmission codes as failure are often a result of torque converter clutch brake up and send debris around the transmission and cooler.
I am seeing another mechanic today to get a second opinion. How long can one drive around with a "failed" torque converter. It will be 7 days today since the MIL indicator came on and I am getting anxious I don't want to do further damage.
