Timing chain life expentancy of Ford 4.0 V6

(1995 Ford Explorer)
in Englewood, CO on March 11, 2011
I have an Explorer with 4.0 V6. The engine has 190,000 miles on it. The timing chain sounds healthy. Does anyone know how long this timing chain is expected to last?

There is no mileage expectancy I am aware of. I know that the 4.0L OHV V6 is a pretty solid and strong engine. When maintained well, you will probably only suffer from oil leaks. Keep up the maintenance as you must be to get to 190K and you will probably continue to put on mileage.

Well, just recently came onto this Explorer. The water pump and timing cover leak some coolant and I may have a look at that timing setup.
Took the timing cover off a 3.0 V6 Ford for its water leaks and timing chain looked great at 130k miles.
Thanks Dave

Oh yes, you may indeed have the leaks. And hey, while you're in there, it can't hurt to change the chain and gears. But as a rule it wouldn't be necessary.

This engine goes back into the mid-80's - it was a 2.9L V6 in the Rangers and the Merkur Scorpios, for example. It's a solid engine overall.
