I am told the timing chain needs to be replaced. Why would this go bad, and about how much will this cost?

Timing chains wear out from not changing oil enough or just a lot of miles on the engine. The timing kit parts price is $83 and the labor is approx 5.4hrs, So about $650 to $750 depending on the repair shop.

the timing chain on my daughter's 2002 Sunfire GT ecotec just went. The timing chain kit, valve cover kit and timing cover kit amounted to approx $550 just for parts. We are doing the labour ourselves. Shop quote was $1300!.
