The compressor belt is gone. What does it do and how long can you drive it without it?

If you are talking about the a/c compressor belt and the belt went around nothing else then yes. It will only effect the a/c operation. You also will not have the benefit of the a/c system removing moisture from the interior air when you have it set on defrost.
