Stuck in the automactic 4 wheel drive

(1999 Ford Explorer)

I have a grinding noise coming from my front tires, after inspecting it I see my great explorer is stuck in 4 wheel drive. How do I get it unstuck?

I used to drive in reverse a little, sometimes even stabbing the throttle to put some slack in the gear train to get the 4wd to let go. Try that.
