There is a strong smell of gas in the passenger compartment when the engine initially starts and particularly when the heater is running. The check engine light is on. The light is steady...not flashing.

I would get the engine light code checked,I suspect it will be an Evap. fault.Be sure when you get gas not to over fill the gas tank. This can cause problems with you vapor canister.
Thanks Mech2525.

Your diagnosis was absolutely correct. Are you a mechanic?
I have an additional check engine code related to my transmission:

P1811 Maximum adapt & long shift.

Can you briefly explain what this is? And do you have any idea of what this type of repair might cost? Thanks.
