Starter would not stop running while engine running or when turn ignition off

(1990 Ford Bronco)
in Lubbock, TX on April 17, 2015
It continued to run. It did not do it all the time but third time is it just stopped. Now when I turn ignition it just clicks. Was this a bad starter all along or was there another issue that caused this and will do same thing when I replace my starter?

battery voltage good,12.6 volts, with engine off.if so,take the starter off and have it checked at the zone.

Changed out starter. Was bad. But my battery was drained dead and nothing left on....battery is relatively new. What do you think? Also do you think there is another problem that might just do the same to new starter?

have you already put the new starter on?is it starting ok?if so,i would take a look at the ignition switch(electrical part on lower column)unplug it and check both the plug and the switch for any signs of getting hot, burnt, melting of either.the switch is only $16.00.
if your key switch has been acting up or just loose or sticking,it is only $16.00 also.just a thought!charge the battery also.

Battery charged... hooked it back up and starter is going so had to disconnect battery. Whatever position key is in starter still going. Where do you think this problem lies??

leave the battery disconnected.did you take the ignition switch off like i said before?the electrical part on lower column.that or the key cylinder is staying in the crank position.the switch send a signal to the solenoid/relay on the firewall to let the power go to starter, but you said the firewall solenoid was new.let me know what you find.
