Speedometer failure

(1993 Toyota 4Runner)
in Hacienda Heights, CA on May 01, 2010
the Speedometer and Odometer on my 1993 toyota 4runner recently stopped working. Is there a way to test the speed sensor at the tranmission end to determine if that is the cause before pulling the dash apart to check there.
