Smoke from the steering column

(1997 Acura RL)
in San Diego, CA on June 16, 2009
When I started my car the check engine light was blinking then went away. After going only about a block, it smelled like something was burning. Then smoke started coming from the base of the steering column. What does this mean and what can I do to fix it.

Hopefully you have had this looked at already if not disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected and have the car towed to a repair shop. I am anxious to hear what the cause of the "smoke" was. I work on a lot of Acuras and have not seen this problem. Acura wiring is very reliable, only problems I see are aftermarket alarms and stereo related wiring.
