unplugging the battery for 30 secs should shut off the light but most likely will come back on in 5-8 ignition cycles or your next 20 min drive.advance auto or auto zone can check it for you to tell you why its on but they wont turn it off anymore because of a class action law congress put into effect cause there scared to death we would pass the emmisions test with a check engine light that was just cleared, and thats the way it is and the reason why.

Clearing the check engine light fixes absolutely nothing and really should only be done once a repair is completed. By not approaching the cause of the engine light, you are likely allowing some failed part to continue to deteriorate other related components, and in the end will have a much larger problem, possibly rendering your vehicle unusable and in need of major repairs.
