Serpintine belt

(1999 Pontiac Grand Am)
in Euless, TX on May 17, 2010
My serpintine belt is making this awful noise like if i need to replace it, but that is not the problem@ all. When the temp gauge reaches 200 or more the noise some what stops. my car dosn't hardly ever reach it's 200 mark like it's suppose too. i didn't have any problems til my power steering pump went out, i replaced it twice because i thought maybe the guy who fixed it the first time didn't do it right, but the noise got worse instead!!!!!!!!!!!! help

belts tend to shrink when hot so the tension becomes greater and the noise stops. the tensioner sounds like it has failed. common proble, replace the belt and tensioner for that.
the thermostat may need to be replaced. it is tough on the 3.1 as it is under the exhaust crossover pipe on the frivers sdie at the end of the upper hose.

get some belt lube at an auto parts store. I have a 99 grand prix that runs cool until it ideles for a long period of time. depends on what type thermostat it has.
