(1990 Honda Civic)
in Columbia, SC on January 29, 2011
I heard a squealing noise for two days whenever I drove my 1990 Honda civic. Engine light(yellow) kept coming on. Then car just shut down. Gas pedal had no pressure at all. I smelled burning and saw light smoke on left side of engine when I lifted the hood. Ways the problem?

So hard to guess without being able to do some diagnostic test. A squealing sound for a few days followed by the engine shutting off could be a loose fan belt but the symptoms could be more serious and something I have come across on the 1990 Civic. I have seen the distributor bearings seize (make noise for a few days first) followed by the timing belt breaking because the distributor no longer turns and stops the camshaft. Just a guess but something I have seen a dozen times. Hopefully it turns out to be something a lot simpler and less expensive.
