Replace oil pan gasket

(1999 Buick Regal)
Oil pan gasket is leaking so the dealer wants to replace the pan gasket and the oil pump cover, to the tune of about 800.00. I questioned this amount and the reply was 6 hrs. labor due to having to lower the engine cradle. Is this a neccasary step to complete this work?

Yes dropping the engine cradle and picking the motor up several inches is a necessary step. The oil pump pick up tube and the length and position of the oil pan make it impossible to remove and replace gasket without doing this. Alternate option is to completely remove the engine and change the gasket on an engine stand which is just as many hours as the cradle drop.
