I think that he knows his stuff. He does great, he doesn't have a real methodology for pricing and so he prices it any way he wants. For all the work he did, it seems like a reasonable price but he charged eighty or ninety dollars for an oil change because I think that is a little arbitrary. I would like for him to have a better pricing methodology so I know upfront what he would charge for the service.

Though we continue to refine the details of our pricing model, our model always incorporates cost savings for our customers of 20-50% over dealer pricing, with better than dealer capabilities. And we never recommend services that customers don't need (a dealer classic). We typically sell parts below their recommended retail price. We use standard hours to price labor (same as every other shop out there).

As far as oil changes: We essentially lose money on our oil changes as we use only Amsoil products and Wix filters. Highest quality lubricants and filters. I put $50 of materials into an $80 oil change (in your case) and (after labor) essentially lose money. I always tell my customers that if they want a cheaper oil change (for example), just go to Jiffy Lube and have the 16 year olds do their oil change and provide no real value-add (inspection, etc.) beyond the cheap oil and lube. Customers come here because they value to high service levels, the auto engineering and MIT mechanical engineering background and the honesty levels that come from an owner that runs a charity to fix cars for the working poor out of his own shop (founded 5 years prior to opening Royal Autowerks FWIW).

My estimates and pricing are typically in $10 increments (for easy discussion and understanding with customers) but always reflect significant value and savings versus other high-capability shops and dealers. And we always provide our pricing upfront (unless a customer comes in and says "just get it done and let me know what the cost is when we pick it up". This actually happens a lot because of high trust and service levels here are Royal AW. Also, we do leave a lot of revenue on the table (no shop supply and environmental fees like everyone else).
