you undo the shifter from under the car to release it from the trans. i am assuming you are removing the trans??

I am removing the trans to install a clutch. In the manual I have it says to twist the retaninig ring off. It does not have one. I took the boot off around the shifters and can't see how it comes off other than unbolting the whole shifter housing from the trans.
