Blind Spot Monitoring System Does Not Function

Recall Details

The blind spot monitoring feature will not operate because the steering wheel and instrument cluster on the vehicle does not support this function. Dealers will install the proper instrument cluster and steering wheel to enable the blind spot monitoring function free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The blind spot monitoring feature does not function with the vehicle, as certain necessary components are not installed on the vehicle to support this feature. As a result, the system will not operate as expected for the driver, allowing vehicles to be present in the blind spot and can result in an accident.

Summary
Daimler Vans USA LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris vehicles. These vans were to be equipped with the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) feature, however, the installed instrument cluster and steering wheel does not support the function, and thus, the BSM system does not work on the vehicle.
Consequence
If a vehicle is in the driver's blind spot, but the BSM system does not warn the driver, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will install the correct instrument cluster and steering wheel to enable the BSM function, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267.
Notify
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
