Engine Seizes

Recall Details

The engine may seize due to a manufacturing issue with piston wrist pins, causing the piston to not be secure and possibly drift, damaging internal engine components. Dealers will inspect and replace the piston assemblies and damaged engine components as necessary free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The engine may seize when operating, causing it to stop running, which can increase risk of an accident or fire.

What Should You Do?

Recall repairs on your Honda must be performed by a Honda dealership. American Honda notified known owners of affected vehicles beginning in the spring of 2016. If you did not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Honda or Acura dealerships. They will also check for any other uncompleted recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with.

Summary
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2016 Civic vehicles manufactured September 22, 2015, to February 3, 2016 and equipped with 2.0L engines. The affected vehicles have engines with piston assemblies that may have been manufactured without a piston wrist pin circlip or with an incorrectly installed piston wrist pin circlip.
Consequence
If a circlip is missing or incorrectly installed, the piston wrist pin may not be secure and may drift and damage the engine cylinder causing the engine to seize, and increasing the risk of a crash or a fire.
Remedy
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the piston assemblies and damaged engine components, as necessary, free of charge. Parts are expected to be available in the Summer of 2016. Owners will be mailed an interim notification beginning March 31, 2016, and will be mailed a second notice when parts are available. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is JX9.
