Recall 14V202000

Child Safety Door Locks Fail

Recall Details

The rear door child safety locks may not engage securely due to being manufactured to incorrect tolerances. Dealers will inspect the rear side door locks and replace affected ones free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The child safety door locks for the rear doors of the vehicle may not securely engage, resulting in the door being able to be opened from the inside when thought to be secure. This could result in occupant injury when a door opens unexpectedly.

What Should You Do?

Recalls on your BMW must be performed by a BMW dealership. BMW began notifying known owners of affected vehicles in 2014. If you did not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local BMW dealerships. They will also check for any other uncompleted recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with.

Original Recall from the NHTSA

Manufacturer's Report Date
April 17, 2014
NHTSA Action Number
Potential Number of Units Affected
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2014 X5 SAV vehicles manufactured December 12, 2013, through March 10, 2014, and equipped with the Soft Close Automatic (SCA) option. The rear side door lock mechanisms may not have been manufactured to correct tolerances and when the inside door handle is pulled, the previously engaged child safety lock can disengage.
A disengaged child safety lock would allow the rear seat occupant to pull the door handle twice and open the door while the vehicle is parked or in motion, increasing the risk of injury.
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear side door locks and any affected door locks will be replaced, free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
