I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla and just discovered that the engine diagnostic code is PO171. How much should the work cost with parts and labor?

Without testing your 2006 Toyota Corolla, it's impossible to answer! These are 'some' of the possibilities for code PO171: - Intake air leaks - Faulty front heated oxygen sensor - Ignition misfiring - Faulty fuel injectors - Exhaust gas leaks - Incorrect fuel pressure - Lack of fuel - Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor - Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection
Usually the P0171 is for a fualty mass air flow sensor. There are several other things it could be as previously listed, but if you want to go for the quick fix. Try the mass air flow sensor. A new one from Toyota will cost you about $175. You can get less expensive ones from an auto parts store.
