i have a problem with my tranny it shifts into 3rd gear around 20 mph and is really slugish until it gets up to speed then when it goes into 4th i have to let off the gas so it shifts otherwise it slips into nuetral and even when it is in 4th and i hit the gas to excelerate fster it slips. it also never wants to start in the cold any other time it starts fine. any response will be much apreciated, thanks.

This could be caused by low fluid level and could damage the transmission. If the fluid's full, clean and clear, I don't think the trans is shot but maybe there's a problem in the valve body. If the fluid's black and burnt, it's probably time for a replacement transmission. Get to a transmission shop or a Ford specialist for more information and an estimate. 1991 is the last year of the AOD transmission for the Grand Marquis. This was mechanically operated (non-electronic) unit, and had a Throttle Valve Cable (TV cable) that would often have the grommet that holds it onto the throttle break off. This leave the TV cable inoperative, and creates huge problems, possibly burning up the transmission. I suspect this cable grommet has broken. Have a look for a detached cable at the throttle... The grommets are less than $10 at the dealers. Try to hook it back up, and if it works - you are in luck! If you do not have any issue with that cable from a visual inspection, then obviously defer to Bob's recommendations as they are spot on otherwise. Good luck!
