Engine overheated engine failed the block test. Must cylinder heads be removed?

The engine overheated on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 3.7 L V6. I was told the mechanic did a block test. A test liquid was put into the coolant and detector liquid was light green, which indicates exhaust gas getting in to the coolant. Do I have to have the head removed and machined?
