Car starts but when accelerating barely moves & starts knocking violently, why?

When I startup my car it sounds perfectly fine but when I shift it to drive it starts shaking then when I start to accelerate it it trys to move forward but it ends up knocking extremely...I think the sound is from the engine but I'm not too sure... do you know what might be the problem? This also happens when I put it on reverse but the difference is that it starts shaking and it tries to go but then my car just dies. Checked the oil... Nothing is leaking either... I'm not sure what's going on
