Known Problems

Select year models of the Honda Civic Si may have problems with the EVAP canister vent solenoid. It stops responding to commands to open and close, and the following occurs:

  • Illumination of the check engine light
  • OBD trouble code P1457 is stored
  • Engine takes longer than usual to start
  • Fuel mileage decreases noticeably
  • The valve is located on the charcoal canister, and is meant to open and close upon command. It fails due to corrosion breaking one of two internal seals, which allows air to escape the system, signaling the OBD trouble code P1457.

Correcting the problem can be done by replacing the vent valve, or, in some cases, cleaning and resealing the vent valve has been successful. You can get an estimate for this repair here.

A worn, missing, or loose gas cap can cause the same issues.

On the Si, a faulty 3rd gear can cause problems shifting into third gear. Removing the transmission and replacing the third gear assembly is required to repair this issue.
On certain models the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) misinterprets data from the coolant sensor and sets a false Check Engine light (MIL). A software update from Honda is required for this repair.
On some models the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) can misinterpret data and set a false Check Engine light (MIL) for catalyst failure. A software update from Honda will address this issue.
On the HX model, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) can misinterpret oxygen sensor data and set a false Check Engine light (MIL). A software update from Honda is needed for this issue.

On certain models the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) can misinterpret the secondary oxygen sensor data and set a false Check Engine Light. A software update from Honda is needed for this issue.

On certain models the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) misinterprets coolant temperature data and can turn on the Check Engine light (MIL). A software update from Honda is needed to address this issue.

On some engines a sticking variable valve timing valve can cause  the Check Engine light (MIL) to illuminate. Replacing the valve and a software update will address this issue.

Impact damage to the front of the vehicle can cause the primary O2 sensor to blow fuse 15 and cause the Check Engine light (MIL) to come on. In most cases the primary O2 sensor needs replacing and a new fuse installed to repair the issue.

A failure of the Primary O2 sensor heater can cause illumination for the Check Engine Light. Replacing the O2 is required to repair this issue.

Impact damage to the front of the vehicle can cause the primary oxygen sensor to blow fuse 15 and cause the Check Engine light (MIL) to come on. In most cases the primary oxygen sensor needs replacing and a new fuse installed to repair the issue.

Excessive second clutch wear (automatic transmission) can cause the car not to move and set a Check Engine light (MIL). Replacing the transmission is necessary when this happens.
On certain models the automatic transmission range switch can fail and cause the Check Engine light (MIL) to illuminate, and the engine may not crank intermittently. Replacing the range switch is needed for this repair.

A faulty power window switch can cause the power windows to stop working, or to work intermittently.

The 1999-2000 Honda Civic Si engine oil pressure sensor is known to leak from normal operation.

More information about the oil pressure sensor here.

To correct the leak, the sensor must be inspected, properly sealed and installed, or replaced with new.
