Noticing for a couple of months a burning smell coming into the car, at random times. Sometimes very strong, enough to have to drive with the windows down. Took into dealer and discovered the PTU (the thing off the transmission that powers the AWD) was leaking fluid, possibly dripping on exhaust causing the burning smell. The transmission needs to be replaced on a 2010 Ford Fusion after 60,000 miles. The transmission struggles to upshift until third gear and then kicks in. The transmission slips randomly while shifting during drive. The transmission slips occasionally when downshifting to a complete stop.
The Check Engine Light may come on due to failure of the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoid. The VCT solenoid will need to be replaced to correct this concern.
Squeaks and creaks heard while driving over bumps and turning can be caused be a couple common sources and should be carefully diagnosed. Electrolysis can cause repeated failures of the heater core and radiator. The diagnosing technician should check for voltage present in the coolant, with the battery disconnected, because electrical current in the coolant causes electrolysis. Corroded or deteriorated parts should be replaced, and the coolant should be flushed. Ground straps can be added to help prevent future corrosion of components.
