Power Steering issues

(1999 Mercury Sable)
I replaced the pump, put in some new fluid and it spilled over. Put more fluid not beyond the cold fill limit... spilled again. Anyhow, now it seems to hold its "juice" but the power steering is sporadic, sometimes there is power assist and sometimes dead/none. Do I need to bleed again, or could it be that switch on that line near the rack?

not the switch. it is for bumping up the idle when under a load.
could be air in the system. turn to the max left and right to bleed. could also be the rack. what was your original issue for replacing the pump?

Had a similar issue. It was leaking fluid like crazy. Mechanic replaced the rack and pinion (about $700; because of labor) and now it drives like a dream and no more leaks!
