First check your power steering fluid. If it is full then you most likely have a problem/s with either the power steering belt had broken or the power steering pump and/or the power steering rack and pinion have failed. Sometimes this is more evident when the car is cold and as you drive it appears to work a little better. If the fluid is full it will then require a technician to runs dome diagnostic check and then make repairs from there.
You have lost your steering assist because there's no PS fluid in the system, or the pump or steering rack failed. Does it make noise? Is the belt still on the pump pulley? Check the PS fluid first.

Checking the power steering fluid would be the first step. If you are low on fluid then there is leak, it would be best to have the system checked for a leak if it is low. There are several components in the system that can cause a hard steering problem.
