There is an electrical barrel connector midway behind the upper edge of the carpet on the passenger side that you have to disconnect to enable base timing so that you can set the distributor for 0 degrees. There is nothing in the service manual about it, just a mention on the sticker that is on top of the radiator support. There is some sort of label on the connector, but I don't remember the legend. As long as the wire is connected, the ECM will control timing and it will jump around on you.
