(1999 Pontiac Montana)
in Birmingham, AL on November 15, 2010
My 1999 Pontiac Montana is overheating. You can't even go a mile without the temperature gage going up and then it will go backdown. The engine is running sluggish. I put some seal block in and it is leaking antifreeze from somewhere. The fan seems to be coming on but I don't know what the problem is. The thermostat was replaced 5 months ago and also the dashboard has started cracking. What could be causing all this to happen?

your intake gaskets are blown. g.m. used cheap plastic and silicone intake gaskets.and still use them today. felpro has come out with an improved retrofit intake gasket set that is made out of aluminum and black rubber ,they cost twice what the cheap ones do but will hold up for years.the coolant leak is from the intake gasket leaking bad enough to leak to the outside usually on the back on the thermastat side. look on the bottom of the oil cap for a mayonaisse looking crap.this means that the coolant is getting into your oil.i have put in four intake/head gaskets in my '99 olds silhouette. but the retrofit felpro set have lasted the longest.

Recently had similar problem with very rusty cooling system and resavoir tank. Repair shop did a "heavy duty" BG system clean and replaced thermostat. Heater is working good and temperature is back to normal operation. Did not change hoses although reccomend doing so. No leaks detected. Your hoses may need to be replaced. May need tune up to address slugigish problem. Dash board cracking caused by excessiv sun heat, drying and cold temp changes notwithstanding age of vehicle!
