The fans are not coming on unless the air conditioner is running, First noticed as the car was idling but now it shows hot after driving a couple of miles even with the air on.

There may be a high and low speed fan issue - even with the AC on it may not be blowing the fan fast enough.

However, there can be other reasons for overheating - I would check them out too. These are things such as thermostat sticking, checking for good and clear radiator air flow, verifying coolant circulation with the water pump... Do some checking or have someone diagnose your concern.

Good luck.

I own a Avalon XL 1999 182,500 miles. when I Drive for about 20 minutes the heat indicator starts to jump. when I start moving again it go down to about normal temp. I believe the radiator fan isn't turning on. To cool the car i turn on the Heat at full blast witch brings down the temp back to normal.
