my overdrive button in the gear shift does not work anymore, other than not getting good gas mileage, by not having the OD button working, will it harm my engine other than just making it work harder?

Other than fuel mileage and making the engine work harder there should be no ill affects from not having the OD button working. You may consider having the problem diagnosed including an estimate to repair your OD operation. One you know the cost to repair the system you can decided if it is worth while.
