What caused my car to sound like I was still in park when I shifted it to drive

(1999 Honda Civic)
On Monday I left my car running for 10 min got back in the car it still running fine tried to put it in reverse and it sounded like I still in park when I hit the gas I turned it off and started it back up and it reversed put in drive and it was driving little slow so I pulled over turned it off again reversed it and put it in drive tried to go forward and it sounded like I was in park today I started it up put it in drive and it went with no problem what can be the cause
What seems to make the problem better or worse? Idk

Check your trans fluid first. If it's not going into gear right away you may be low on fluid. If that isn't your issue then you will need to bring this to a qualified shop for diagnosis.
